No really, if you’ve been to a Born Gold show you will know what I’m talking about. And we mustn’t forget Born Gold ringleader and vocalist Cecil Frena, a genius when it comes to putting on a live show. Band member Corin Roddick doubles as one half of the up-and-coming electro-pop duo Purity Ring while Calvin McElroy leads a solo career as Kuhrye-oo. It’s only looking better for the boys of Born Gold as we enter into 2012. If you were to listen to their earlier, lo-fi leaning releases you might not believe that the same group would make anything as catchy, ecstatic, and downright danceable as Bodysongs. At the beginning of this year they were known as Gobble Gobble and only a choice few of their sugary sweet synth pop anthems were circulating on their Internet. It’s astounding how far Born Gold have come. Love is the Devil is some of their best work to date and of all the 18 tracks on the album not a one is filler.įor a more in-depth analysis of Love is the Devil see the review I did back in August: Love-is-the-Devil The duo of Leo Wyndham and Chris Marigold have been making music as Blu Mar Ten since the early 90’s, and it’s about time these guys got the recognition they deserve. However, it is no coincidence that these guys put out one of the best electronic albums, and quite possibly the best drum & bass album in 2011. It is merely coincidence that Blu Mar TEN are number 10. Blu Mar Ten! No, that is not supposed to be some lame joke.

On May 17th, 2012 the band announced the dissolution of the Handsome Furs on their homepage. In 2009 the Handsome Furs released their second long player, Face Control. Before that, they had been banned from entering the States for months. At the end of 2007 the duo was finally able to go on a US tour. In spring 2007 the album was released in the USA and Europe. The two signed to Sub Pop in late 2006 and recorded their debut album Plague Park in December. The duo then also opened for Arcade Fire, David Cross and Modest Mouse. They quickly wrote their own songs, rehearsed them together with cover versions and went on tour without having published their song material. Then in 2006 the two received the offer to tour Scandinavia. The idea of founding his own band first came to Boeckner in winter 2005 when he was experimenting musically with Perry in Vancouver. Boeckner mostly plays guitar and sings while Perry operates the keyboard and drum computer. Spencer Krug founded the band Sunset Rubdown and Dan Boeckner founded the duo Handsome Furs with his wife and writer Alexei Perry. Handsome Furs came about when Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner - the two songwriters and singers from Wolf Parade - turned to other projects in order to better implement their own musical ideas.
